Congratulations to the JD Class of 2020! My very best wishes to all of you -- including the special wish that each and every one of you finds new and transformative ways to participate in making the futures we want and need for people and all forms of life everywhere. You are the very first QLaw graduating class to have had to make the unbelievable pivot from legal education as we all know and love it to new formats that had to be made up as the year ended. I hope that the creativity, determination, joy of learning you exhibited, and your wide-ranging knowledge and backgrounds will shape your work and lives going forward! And, please stay in touch as you journey forward into the futures we all want and need!

Many things shall pass, but not this: you now join the community of Queen's Law graduates. Like those you join in this community, you will serve in government as elected representatives, public servants, and Crown counsel; will join law firms as barristers and as solicitors; will join the academy as researchers and professors; and will do much beyond law too. You will carry Queen's Law with you in all the places you'll go, offering a way of thinking, of seeing, of analyzing. You will do great things. Congratulations class of 2020!

I know this couldn’t have been the way you imagined your time at law school ending. You should nonetheless feel enormously proud to have reached this stage. Law school is no picnic. It’s an intense social and intellectual experience from the first day to the last. When it’s over, it’s hard to believe. You’ll find, I think, that your time at Queen’s Law has equipped you for the meaningful work that lies ahead, whatever type of law you choose to practice or, if you choose not to continue in law, whatever career you end up pursuing. Indeed, you’ll find that your time here has set you up for success not so much because of what you’ve learned, but because you’ve learned how to learn. It seems to me that you are fortunate to be launching into a world that needs you more than ever. The world is fortunate too

Dear 2020 graduates, Congratulations!!

This is an incredible achievement, and I look forward to celebrating in person with all of you some point in the future. You are such bright, hard-working, motivated and accomplished young people, and I always feel so fortunate to have the chance to explore the intricacies and vagaries of law with you. For your entertainment, I include a graduation photo from earlier years wherein we demonstrated a tort (battery, with some assault thrown in for good measure). Let's re-enact this when we get a chance to meet for convocation - preferably with someone other than me as the victim next time!

To the Graduating Class of 2020:

Congratulations on this tremendous achievement and important milestone. It has been a pleasure to read, argue, and learn with you. I'm sorry that the world you graduate into is one filled with so much uncertainty. Please remember that your first job does not define your career, and in any event, your job title never limits the work you do or the impact that you have. So show up however you are and do whatever you can -- the world needs your talent and dedication and anger and love.

Until we can celebrate in person,

Yours, ever

Ashwini Vasanthakumar

To all graduands and especially those of you whom I met in Public Law and in Equality Rights and the Charter classes, I hope you have exciting, and above all happy, future legal lives.

All the best,

Bev Baines, Law'73

Congrats and thanks to all those special Queen’s crim. keeners and especially to several of you who achieved court clerkships.

Covid-19 has really challenged our criminal justice system and sorely needs the insights of fine new counsel.

Best

Congratulations Law 2020! As you can see from my “wall of shame”, I have a lot of experience graduating! The first time it was so hot the woman beside me needed first aid! The second time, it was after a year when my Dad had been seriously ill and my relationship with my partner had ended … and I cried the whole time. The last time, my daughter, baby son and husband were all able to celebrate with me. Whatever the circumstances, graduation is about much more than a ceremony. It’s a time to celebrate all you have accomplished, the challenges you’ve overcome, the relationships you’ve made, and how much you’ve grown as a person! As Queen’s Law Grads, you are all poised to make important contributions to the profession and your communities. Even if we can’t celebrate in person because of COVID, “Don’t Stop Believing” in your bright futures!

Your law degree is the product of hard work and determination, a testament to three transformative years that finished up in a most extraordinary way. Whatever path you choose, I hope that you will find space to use your training in the law to help others and to make a difference in your own way. Thank you for all that you have done in the last three years to make Queen’s Law an extraordinary community and please remember that it will always be your community. I wish you only the best as you move on to new heights.

Stay in touch!

Congratulations, Class of 2020 ! While your time here may have felt short, you will be a part of the Queen's Law family for life! We look forward to seeing you at our regular alumni receptions in your city (a great time to connect with classmates and network with other alumni), and especially welcome you home in five years for your 5th year reunion at Homecoming. If you ever need anything in the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out. We wish you all the best in the future!

Congratulations Class of 2020 ! Shine bright, live long, and be the change...

Thanks!

Dear Class of 2020,

First, congratulations on graduating from law school! This is an amazing accomplishment under any circumstances and I hope you feel pride in it.

Second, I imagine that the legal world you are stepping into – the whole world, in fact – feels very uncertain. I recall a similar feeling of uncertainty in the wake of 9/11, when I started law school. But I know that the knowledge, skills and confidence that you brought to law school and that you acquired and developed at Queen’s Law will get you and your classmates through this difficult time. I hope it also will guide you in bringing about positive change to make our post-Covid society a better and more equal place.

All our best and please keep in touch with Queen’s Law!
