Program Structure
This four-year combined program capitalizes on the strength of the internationally acclaimed, intensive 12-month Master of Business Administration (MBA) offered by Smith School of Business and the rich program in business law offered by Queen’s Law.
Options for early completion of the program in three-and-a-half years are available. Through the Bader College option, students earn nine upper-year credits in the International Business Law Program at the Bader College at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England.
An on-campus early completion option in three-and-a-half years, which permits students to apply 12 transfer credits from the MBA program toward completion of the JD degree at Queen’s.
Admission to JD/MBA
Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to both the JD degree and the MBA. Admission to the combined program is not guaranteed to applicants who meet only the minimum criteria for admission.
Admission requirements and application forms for the MBA can be found on the Smith MBA website.
Applicants who are accepted into the Queen’s JD Program can begin their application to the Full time MBA at the School of Business as long as they complete the requirements under each program. Applications to the FTMBA Program are processed mid-May each year, for the next intake (upon completion of the first year of the JD law program). Your FTMBA Application is required to be completed for eligibility, therefore it is encouraged to apply well in advance of this deadline for consideration. Please note we require your first year JD transcripts before making a final decision on an application.
- Successful completion of a four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university. Successful candidates will have a minimum cumulative undergraduate average of at least B+ (76% – 79%), with an average of A- (80% – 84%) in years three and four of the undergraduate degree program.
- In place of a GMAT or GRE, the LSAT will be considered for JD/MBA applicants. LSAT scores should be ≥ 157 to fall within our competitive range.
- While most applicants have a minimum of two years’ work experience, this requirement may be waived for exceptional applicants to the program. Co-op placements and post-doctoral fellowships are also given consideration.
- If applicable, an acceptable score on one of the approved English facility tests (TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB).
Graduate Diploma in Business
Smith School of Business offers a four-month Graduate Diploma in Business (GDB) that may be combined with JD degree studies for recent university graduates with a degree in a non-business discipline. The GDB offers a comprehensive overview of business fundamentals, which are similar to those in the full-time MBA's Fundamentals Module. JD students can complete the GDB from May to August before or after first-year JD studies. Students who complete the GDB successfully with a B+ average may apply later to have the credits count toward a Smith MBA or Master's.
