One of the best ways to know if a law school is a good fit is to meet its community members. JD students offered admission to Queen’s Law starting in September did exactly that at two recent on-campus events and they will have more opportunities at receptions across Canada this spring.

On March 6, faculty, staff and current students enthusiastically greeted potential Law’18 candidates at Welcome Day, the school’s open house filled with activities to show what it’s like to be a Queen’s Law student for a day. The new recruits learned about the curriculum offerings and career paths for several areas of law with faculty, students and alumni, and also about the school’s vast array of international opportunities. At an information fair, Faculty and University representatives answered their questions on programs and services from clinical programs to financial assistance. The day ended with student-guided tours of Macdonald Hall and the opportunity to ask more questions on what it’s really like to be a student here.

“All in all, attending Welcome Day made me increasingly confident that I will be choosing Queen's!” wrote one of the guests.

Ryan Wilson is one of many students who not only agrees, but has already accepted an offer to join the class of Law’18. “Speaking to the students in casual conversation, person-to-person, really gave me an open view into what Queen's Law would be for me,” he says. “Most importantly, it was near impossible to overlook the strong sense of community that each student held for the Law program and Queen's University. Additionally, hearing talks from the faculty and the passion they held for the program similarly reinforced my understanding of what it would be like as a Queen's Law student and the engaging academic classes that would be offered.”

Another group of first-year candidates visited the school on March 21 for a more informal session with student ambassadors.

Next up the newly accepted students can meet each other and begin networking with Queen’s Law graduates during an alumni event in the city nearest them. Dean Bill Flanagan and alumni partners are hosting the cocktail receptions in Toronto (April 29), Vancouver (May 13), Calgary (May 14) and Ottawa (June 25).  At another Toronto reception on May 4, the Dean, members of his advisory council, student ambassadors and lawyers from the host firm Bennett Jones will be welcoming new members to the Queen’s Law community.
