Now in our 61^st year, Queen’s Law has a remarkable record as a trailblazer in legal education and scholarship – in Canada and beyond. As the legal profession continues to grow and change, so does the Faculty: its business law program is expanding, our new undergraduate program is attracting students from across Canada, and the Faculty continues to innovate in the classroom.

Growing faculty: Our research and teaching complement continues to grow. We are well ahead of our faculty growth projections. We are currently recruiting to fill up to 7 new positions – which will see our faculty complement grow to 39 faculty members, a remarkable 30% increase since 2014. Recent faculty additions have included our Allgood Professor in Business Law, Mohamed Khimji, and Professor Gail Henderson – both also awarded major grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in 2017.

Excellence in recruitment: Our success in communicating the Queen’s Law story can also be seen in our application numbers: up 11% in 2017, the highest increase of any law school in Ontario, with over 2700 students applying. Queen’s Law continues to outpace the national average in categories that measure diversity: including students with a parent born outside Canada and students who identify as a member of a racialized group. Law’20 has 10 Indigenous students among its numbers (5% of the class) – the largest number of Indigenous students in a single cohort in the school’s history. These trends are also reflected in the growing size and diversity of our graduate program.

Excellence in placement: Our students continue to have placement rates that are among the very best of any law school in Canada. Over 95% of Law’17 reported securing a placement by the time of graduation or 3 months thereafter.  

QL60: As education costs continue to rise, the Queen’s Law community is coming together to make sure our school can keep its doors open to the promising legal minds of tomorrow. Our QL60 campaign is dedicated to enhancing our bursary programs in support of students with financial need, aiming to raise at least $600,000 and help to more than double the size of our endowment in support of students with financial need.

Leadership in business law: The Faculty added its second named professorship in corporate law, the Sigurdson Professorship in Corporate Law and Finance. This new professorship joins the Allgood Professorship in Business Law, established in 2015 and now held by Professor Mohamed Khimji.

Certificate in Law: A fully online undergraduate program – the only online certificate in law offered by a law school in Canada – was launched in the summer of 2017. All four courses in the Certificate (Introduction to Canadian Law, Aboriginal Law, Workplace Law and Corporate Law) routinely fill to capacity, and the Certificate is drawing students from coast to coast. Almost 1700 students will take one of our Certificate courses in 2017/18.

Experiential learning: Since moving to downtown Kingston in 2015, the Queen’s Law Clinics (Queen’s Legal Aid and our Business Law, Elder Law, Family Law and Prison Law clinics) have continued to thrive as both a great learning opportunity for our students and a much needed service to the Kingston community. We have recently appointed an Executive Director for the Clinics, as well as hiring a Director for our Elder Law clinic.
 

Innovation in teaching and learning:  Queen’s Law continues to innovate in course delivery and technology. With the creation of a new in-house role, Education Innovation Developer, we now have full-time support for faculty who want to explore new methods of course delivery and student engagement. This includes the adoption of a learning management system, in-class tools like Poll Everywhere and Echo 360, and video tools like Camtasia.
