Queen's and Oxford convene in novel law, politics and philosophy workshop

Queen's Law, Political Studies and Philosophy faculty convened in Oxford on June 10 for a first-time collaboration, with speakers from both schools discussing topics including "Law and the Socialist Ideal" and "Justifying the Right of Return."

The law of the land

Joy Wakefield, Law’12, Soberman Outstanding Young Alumni Award winner, is a staff lawyer for Legal Aid Ontario and is seconded part-time to Nokiiwin Tribal Council, working with communities on the north shore of Lake Superior. “We have lots of challenges that are unique to smaller communities,” she says, “and I am proud to bring awareness to the successes and what we are pioneering there.”

Recognizing an equity champion

The Honourable Judith Beaman, Law’75, winner of the Cromwell Award for distinction in the public service, saw “every barrier as movable” during her law school days. Over her career as a lawyer, a legal policy analyst, a judge and a leader of an Ontario government commission, she has helped women and families on the journey to equality.

Law'93 human rights advocate to receive Queen’s LLD

At Spring Convocation on June 6, Fiona Sampson, Law’93, shown in 2016 with one of Kenya’s “160 Girls,” will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree for her exceptional work as a human rights advocate. “This honorary LLD,” she says, “feels like an endorsement of the highest order, and fuels my commitment to keep creating change, and affirms that a Queen’s education really is the gift that keeps giving.”

Unlocking a future without detention

Addressing essential questions of incarceration and justice: Queen’s Law played host to the “De-Carceral Futures: Bridging Prison and Migrant Justice” workshop in May of 2019. Over 100 scholars, practitioners, and activists came to campus on May 9 and 10 to discuss how countries like Canada can better protect the rights of those who are detained as they enter our country.

Queen’s LLM student’s research addresses #MeToo movement in India

For her thesis, LLM candidate Shivangi Misra is exploring the legal theory on sexual consent. She has been selected to present research papers at two summer conferences – one in Montreal, Quebec, and the other in Stockholm, Sweden.
