2015 alumni award winners selected from strong group of nominees

With the introduction of two new awards, along with the longstanding H.R.S. Ryan Award, 2015 has been a great year for Queen’s Law alumni to honour their peers. From a broad slate of candidates, the Dean’s Council Awards Committee has announced this year’s winners: James “Jim” Parks, Law’71, Kristin Muszynski, Law’05, and Robert Frater, QC, Law’84. The honorees will accept their trophies at an upcoming alumni event.

Law helps raise aboriginal awareness

Queen’s Law was eager to take part in Aboriginal Awareness Week, an on-campus celebration of indigenous histories and cultures, organized by the Queen’s Native Students’ Association. The group got people of all backgrounds involved in the festivities from March 16–21 to show the importance of understanding that issues facing indigenous peoples are the responsibilities of all Canadians.

Online intro to law course sees enthusiastic reception, plans major expansion next winter

For the past two years, Queen’s undergraduate students have jumped at the chance to take LAW-201 Introduction to the Study of Canadian Law, a fall-winter course taught by Queen’s Law professors. This summer, the course will be offered online for the first time, and further expanded to an even wider audience of students from any Ontario university in the next winter semester.

Students dance up a storm and $14K for cancer research

Cabaret for a Cure, the school’s popular annual dance show and charity fundraiser hosted by the Queen’s Law Cancer Society (QLCS), reached unprecedented heights this year. A greater number of talented student dancers, as well as models in a new fashion show, performed on a larger stage in front of a bigger crowd. The incredibly fun-filled night on March 13 saw more than triple the usual funds raised as classmates, faculty, friends and parents packed the Grand Theatre in downtown Kingston, generating almost $14,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Queen’s Law ‘flips’ for justice

Macdonald Hall was recently filled with students and faculty donning colourful hair pieces – they were “flipping out” to participate in the province-wide campaign “Flip Your Wig for Justice.” Showing a united front with law schools across Ontario, Queen’s Law community members took part in several activities to raise awareness of a national crisis situation, celebrate the law students and professionals who are responding to it, and support six organizations that work to combat the reality facing vulnerable Ontarians.
